HyperKelp has been awarded a $1.3 million contract by the U.S. Navy to develop buoy-based counter-hypersonic detection technology.

This contract leverages the proven success of their Kelp Smart Buoy (KSB) platform, which provides crucial intelligence on hypersonic threats. The KSB system can detect hypersonic aircraft from the ocean’s surface and integrates with U.S. Navy command systems for real-time intelligence sharing.

The KSB is an advanced marine sensing platform designed to deliver comprehensive maritime and atmospheric data. Compatible with over 300 types of environmental, electro-optic, infrared, and radio frequency sensors, the KSB offers a compact and persistent system for continuous monitoring. It can be quickly deployed using existing Navy sensor infrastructure, making it ideal for tracking environmental conditions, surface vessels, and aircraft in remote ocean regions.

HyperKelp‘s journey to this contract has been supported by NW Tech Bridge since 2022, when the company connected with the Tech Bridge’s Naval innovation network. Included among these connections, NWTB introduced HyperKelp to the Disruptive Technologies Laboratory and, in November 2022, they pitched their technology at the NW Tech Bridge’s Pitch Day, gaining valuable additional exposure. These efforts helped position HyperKelp for success, culminating in this Phase II contract award.

The contract focuses on deploying the KSB with sensors capable of detecting hypersonic threats. The technology has been praised for its potential to revolutionize missile defense and early warning systems, with applications across vast ocean areas to protect critical assets. The company specializes in scalable, cost-effective maritime intelligence and buoy-based sensing platforms.
