Now more than ever before, the US Navy is working to addressing climate change, carbon footprint and sustainability.

Climate Action 2030 is the Department of the Navy (DON)’s plan to achieve the Nation’s commitment to net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 because “climate readiness is mission readiness”.

In it, the Navy lays out 5 specific lines of effort aimed at, “transforming the context in which the DON operates, and increasingly putting pressure on our force, defense communities, and the systems that support them.” 

On the one year anniversary of Climate Action 2030, the Assistant Secretary of the Navy (Energy, Installations, and Environment) and Chief Sustainability Officer Meredith Berger announced, “The Department of the Navy is committed to ensuring that the Navy and Marine Corps is the world’s greatest maritime fighting force and the partner of choice for our international allies and partners”. 

“We do that by maintaining every competitive advantage,” she added. “And for that reason we forcefully confront the national security threats posed by climate change. Through collaborative and innovative efforts, our Sailors, Marines, and dedicated civilians have demonstrated that climate readiness is mission readiness.” 

This commitment has been reflected in the topics released by the Department of the Navy Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR), with the 24.2 Broad Industry Announcement (BAA) including multiple topics in the technology area of Renewable Energy Generation and Storage.
