North Star Tools: Enhancing Navy Sailors’ Emergency Response Capabilities

Drawing from firsthand experience aboard the USS Russell (DDG-59), Thomas Williams, a former enlisted U.S. Navy sailor, recognized a critical issue during shipboard emergencies—response times were often delayed due to missing or improper tools, or the inability to use them in tight spaces. This problem frequently puts both sailors and the ship at risk.

To solve this, Williams founded North Star Tools, and designed the Shipboard Damage Control Multi-Tool—a portable, all-in-one device that combines essential tools and streamlines damage control efforts, enhancing efficiency and safety for U.S. Navy sailors in high-pressure situations.

With support from the NW Tech Bridge and Washington APEX Accelerator, Williams navigated the complexities of product development and government contracting, positioning North Star Tools for success.

Over two years, he secured a testing lab, manufacturer, and sales representative, crucial steps leading to the company’s debut at the 2023 NCMS Technology Showcase.

Reflecting on his journey, Williams shared:

Partnering with the APEX Centers and NW Tech Bridge has been monumental to the success of my company.

I approached the APEX centers and NW Tech Bridge in 2022 with minimal knowledge of government procurement. Kate Hoy (APEX) and Ralph Duncan (NWTB) became enthusiastic mentors connecting me to statewide resources such as Impact WA and Business Impact WA, and making themselves readily available to answer questions and educate me on the complexities of obtaining a government contract.

With its first sale secured and with continued mentorship from the NW Tech Bridge, North Star Tools is poised to revolutionize emergency response for the Navy and beyond. The Shipboard Damage Control Multi-Tool is just the beginning. Williams envisions expanding his product line to serve not only military needs but also commercial maritime industries and emergency response teams worldwide.

Williams added:

Thanks to the mentorship I’ve received through NWTB and APEX WA, I now feel confident moving toward my next milestone—winning a government contract and bringing my innovative technology to Sailors.”

As North Star Tools continues to innovate and scale, its journey serves as a powerful example of how veteran-led entrepreneurship, coupled with strategic partnerships, can deliver solutions that save lives and improve efficiency. The future is bright for NorthStar Tools—and for every sailor and first responder who will benefit from its groundbreaking innovations.
